Chief Nyle Zikmund

Chief Zikmund has been with the Spring Lake Park Fire Department (a non-profit corporation serving the communities of Spring Lake Park, Blaine, and Mounds View) since first joining as a volunteer in 1981.  A lifelong resident of the community of Blaine, Chief Zikmund rose through the ranks being promoted to Deputy Chief in 1992.  In January of 1994 Chief Zikmund was selected from a field of candidates to fill a newly created full time training/prevention officer position.  In May of 1995, Chief Zikmund was selected to fill the recently vacated fire chiefs position.

 Chief Zikmund holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin Stout and a Fire Science Technology and Administration Degree from the University of Cincinnati.  He received his Masters of Public Administration from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program.  In 2000 Chief Zikmund became the first chief officer in the State of Minnesota to receive national certification from the Commission on Fire Accreditation.

 He has served as the chair of the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee since 1995, is a member of the Education and Member Services Committee, a past board member of the Minnesota State Fire Department Association, President of the Minnesota Area Relief Association Coalition, an Adjunct Instructor at the National Fire Academy and Executive Director of the Minnesota Fire Certification Board.

 Civic activities include past service in the Kinship program, current service in the local Rotary Club, Blaine Historical Society and Boy Scout Troop 415.

 Chief Zikmund and his wife Terri of 26 years have 13 children; he is the father of one child and parent of 11.  They have hosted (parented) students or international guest from Norway, Hungary, Thailand, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Japan, Germany - 2, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico.

 Hobbies include landscaping, sports, time at the family cabin located on Namakan Lake in northern Minnesota (Namakan is a border lake, half in the US, half in Canada).
