Chief Timm Schabbel


Chief Schabbel has been a member of the Clay Township Fire Department / Clay Fire Territory since 1989, serving through the ranks of Firefighter, Lieutenant, Operations Chief, and finally Fire Chief since 1997

Prior to serving Clay Fire, Chief Schabbel served the Niles Township (MI) Fire Department and the Romeoville (IL) Fire Department.  Before his promotion to Fire Chief of Clay Township, Chief Schabbel also was an active member of the University of Notre Dame Fire Department.

The Clay Fire Territory is a progressive, fifty-person combination department located immediately north of South Bend (IN).  The second Fire Territory in the State of Indiana, the department serves approximately 36,000 citizens living within 16 square miles.

Chief Schabbel holds an Associates Degree in Fire Science from Ivy-Tech State College, a Bachelors Degree in Fire Service Management from Southern Illinois University, an EFO graduate, and has received CFO designation from the CFAI.  In addition, he is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Affairs through Indiana University. 

Currently, Chief Schabbel serves as the President of the Northern Indiana Fire Chiefs Roundtable.  Chief Schabbel is also an active member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association, the Indiana Fire Inspectors Association, the Society of Executive Fire Officers, and the National Fire Protection Association.
